Arts In Action Partners with Columbia Main Street in River Walk Banner Project

Official Unveiling in March 2013

Columbia Main Street and Arts In Action recently selected artwork from submissions by artists in the Duck River Walk

Banner Project.  Area artists were invited to offer banner designs depicting Nine Columbia Muses.  Banners for each muse will be sponsored by an area business and placed along the River Walk park adjacent to the Duck River near downtown Columbia.

Banners were selected for each of the following categories.  Literary Arts (Sponsored by Fisher Pharmacy and Gifts); Culinary Arts (Sponsored by Buckhead

Coffee House); Performing Arts (Sponsored by First Farmers & Merchants Bank); Dance (Sponsored by Haynes Family Chiropractic); Musical Arts (Sponsored by Puckett’s Restaurant); History (Sponsored by Caledonian Financial);

Astronomy (Sponsored by Tri Star Bank); Architecture (Sponsored by Morgan Stanley Smith Barney);  and Visual Arts (Sponsored by Columbia Paint and Wallcover).

Each Muse will be represented with a free community event beginning with an Astronomy Muse Event, “Star and Comet Gazing Evening.”

The 30” x 72” banners will be displayed from lampposts along the Duck River Walk

Bridge. “We were overwhelmed by the number of artists who entered, and by the quality of the entries,” Kathie Hicks Fuston, chairman of the Columbia Main Street Design Committee, said.   Other members of the committee include Susan Jones, President of Arts in Action; Dr. Marian Haynes; Jennifer Moody, Columbia Acting City Manager; Sheryl Putnam of Sheryl Putnam Designs; and Kristi Martin, Executive Director of Columbia Main Street.
